Sustainable Packaging Materials: PFAS-Free and Recyclable Solutions Gain Traction

September 17, 2026

Leading material and chemical suppliers are launching PFAS-free barrier papers, recyclable fiber-based packaging and low-VOC systems as brand owners and converters intensify sustainability and regulatory compliance.

UPM has expanded its barrier-paper portfolio with Asendo 80, a PFAS-free label face stock designed for food-contact packaging. The new grade brings oil and grease resistance to label applications without relying on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, supporting producers navigating tighter restricted-substance rules. XSYS has published its first group sustainability report following the integration of MacDermid, setting out a carbon-reduction roadmap across the flexographic value chain from plate-making and chemistry to pressroom performance. Sun Chemical and Archipelago have jointly developed a fiber-packaging barrier coating aimed at improving recyclability while addressing EU PPWR requirements.

Industry observers say the latest launches reflect a structural shift: sustainability is no longer a niche differentiator but a basic order qualifier. Converters are now expected to provide documented compliance on restricted substances, recyclability profile and carbon footprint alongside print quality. The shift is also driving demand for transparent material data, supplier declarations and pre-approved packaging grades that reduce re-qualification time.

With EU PPWR fully applicable and similar extended-producer-responsibility schemes advancing elsewhere, suppliers are positioning material innovation as the fastest route to market compliance. The coming LOUPE Americas and PACK EXPO shows are expected to accelerate buyer adoption of PFAS-free, fiber-based and recyclable packaging solutions.
